EDUCATION COACH

Turnaround for Children is seeking senior educators to serve as Education Coaches for its work in transforming New York City's most challenging schools into safe, effective and thriving learning environments.

About Turnaround for Children

Turnaround for Children (Turnaround) is a not for profit organization that transforms schools struggling to teach children in chaotic and under-resourced learning environments. The program currently serves 26 schools, the majority of which are in the Bronx. Turnaround's approach helps leadership and staff improve the school environment and address the multiple behavioral and emotional challenges that many students face.

Turnaround is unique in that its approach focuses simultaneously on students, principals, teachers and families to meet the specific needs of each. The Turnaround approach consists of:

  • Coaching for Principals in leadership skills and successful school management;
  • Establishing effective problem solving teams with school staff to address students' behavioral, academic, and social and emotional issues;
  • Providing crisis intervention and on-going mental health support for students with severe mental health issues;
  • Integrating a social and emotional learning curriculum into the school culture that fosters positive youth development;
  • Creating partnerships between schools and community-based organizations that expand access to mental health and social service supports;
  • Promoting the engagement of families with the school community to increase their involvement in their children's education.

In each school, work is managed through coaching and support from three key Turnaround staff- an Education Coach, a Consultative Social Worker and a Community Engagement Specialist- that operate in collaboration with school staff.

Position Responsibilities:
The Education Coach collaborates with and mentors principals and other leaders in up to three schools. He or she is the leader of Turnaround’s efforts in the schools where he or she works, and is the primary liaison between the school and Turnaround.

Through using the Turnaround Model for Children and Schools, the Education Coach is expected to successfully build staff capacity in the school through the establishment of systems that move the school staff from a reactive, crisis driven mode of response to one that is proactive and creates an effective learning environment.

He or she coaches the Principal in successful school management, and works with the principal, other school leaders, staff and school teams to help them:

  • Build effective, distributed leadership systems;
  • Access appropriate professional development activities;
  • Effectively access mental health resources that their students need; and
  • More fully and appropriately engage families in the life of the school.

The Education Coach is expected to assist in the gathering and reporting of information required to track and evaluate the Turnaround intervention.

Qualifications:

Experienced educational leader and history of working with school leadership.

Demonstrated excellence in education and capability to manage and lead programs.

Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

Collegial style and excellent organizational skills.

Ability to mentor/support school supervisors and administrators.

Masters degree in education and appropriate certification as a school administrator.
