From June through December of 2001, Turnaround for Children entered into a partnership with the South Bronx Mental Health Council and the Supportive Children’s Advocacy Network (SCAN) to help these organizations improve the level of service they provide.
Drs. Pamela Cantor and Owen Lewis led a group of Turnaround for Children faculty who trained, mentored, and provided technical assistance to social workers, clinical staff, and other professionals at the South Bronx Mental Health Council. These professionals worked in the public schools (grades k – 12) in the Hunts Point Peninsula district. Members of the SCAN staff in East Harlem were also trained.
Over six months, Turnaround for Children conducted a series of bi-monthly sessions at the South Bronx Mental Health Council and SCAN. This “training the trainers” program enabled staff to train others while providing child mental health professionals with new confidence in their abilities to make a difference in areas of the city with particularly challenging populations.
