Turnaround for Children began working with the Palm Beach County Children's Behavioral Health Initiative in early 1999. Turnaround for Children played a major role in the planning of a prevention-focused initiative under the local direction of Dr. Timothy Coffield. This initiative placed a behavioral health professional in each of the county's public schools. The mission of the project was to develop a sustainable, comprehensive, and multi-disciplinary approach to service delivery. The project was designed to provide services focused on healthy child development. It replaced a group of fragmented and isolated programs with a coordinated system based on best practices. A continuum of care, from prevention to early intervention to treatment, was designed to promote healthy outcomes for children and families. The project sought to identify resources or services that would foster positive outcomes. The ultimate goal was to reduce the number of children in need of intensive clinical services.
